Maintenance Instructions, Tips and Testimonials
Maintenance Instructions:
- Periodic: Clean your buckets with soap and water and then
apply some brand of U.V. protectorant and plastic conditioner inside and
out. Tighten shock cord loops, if they have stretched, to keep the
mounting tension firm. Check for cracks forming under the washers
used for the mounting hooks. Cracks are a sign of bucket overloading and/or
extra hard use. If the mounting hooks are in danger of pulling through the
bucket wall (very rare but not entirely unheard of) then it is time for
repair or replacement. Contact Cobbworks for suggestions on solving the
problem.
- Daily: Avoid prolonged exposure to heat and sun whenever possible.
Store your buckets indoors and away from heaters and windows.
Tips:
- Heel Clearance: It helps to zip-tie a scrap of hose waste (or
other suitable material) on your upper rack rail in front of one mounting
hook. This way the bucket can't slide forward during a bouncy ride. This
procedure also cuts down on the amount of rack scratching and bucket wear
and tear.
- Hook Covers: The stainless steel hooks will scratch your aluminum
bike rack pretty quick. But this sort of wear and tear is expected and not
a problem for durable racks. If you prefer not to have a well worn looking
rack, then ask your local bike shop for a racer-skinny punctured tube being
thrown out. Cut several small sections to slip over your rack rail hooks
and keep the spares. Replace the worn covers with new spares as needed.
- Extra Capacity: Carry a small bungee cord to hook around the
steel ends of the carrying handle near the sockets on each side of the bucket.
Then you can strap down shoes or some other items on top of the lid. The
expedition strap option is a stronger and easier way to do this.
Testimonials:
Joshua Putnam, Burton WA:
I got some favorable comments from field workers around Lompoc when
I was fixing a flat -- popped the buckets off the bike along side the
road, sat on one and spread my tools out on the other, sat comfortably
along side the road instead of squatting on the blazing pavement.
W. Tom Steele, Bremerton WA:
The panniers arrived in great time. I had to adjust them a little
so that they would fit on my bike rack (which was real easy to do....).
I really like the big reflectors.... I believe that your product
is quite innovative...., priced right...., has saftey in mind....,
and is convenient.... All around I consider them to be a best buy
for anyone wanting waterproof saddle bags for their bike.
Alex Wetmore, Seattle WA:
They are great for shopping bikes, and that is my main use of
them. They are also really nice for touring, much nicer then
regular panniers in a few ways. Some cool, non-obvious features
are:
- You can use them as chairs or a small picnic table.
- They flush mount with the top of the rack, providing a
big shelf to strap things down to. Cobbworks sells an "expedition
strap" which helps in this scenario.
